This too, shall pass means that all material conditions, positive or negative, are temporary. Whatever the situation, whatever the emotion, does not last forever, good or bad, happy or sad. It is but a constant, not battle, but journey of letting go so that we may grow. We are in a constant state of always changing. Every thing, everyone, every feeling and every thought. When you find yourself in an unpleasant state of mind, simply remind yourself, this too shall pass. And when you are on top of the world, be present and grateful, because that too shall pass. It's the ups and downs that make what we call life a roller coaster ride. For without death, there cannot be life. And without the transition from day to night, you could see no stars. Things must change. It is just the way it is.
The pain that we experience is because of the resistance to change, which is the nature of the human condition. It's because we become attached to the way things are, to people in our lives now, and expect things to stay the same forever...or the things we want to stay forever. But this goes against the natural law of things. The goal is to become unattached and to allow everything to move, change, and shift exactly the way it will.
This will be one of the most important life lessons we can learn. So, if you are struggling or hurting, know it will not last forever. When the bad days seem like they are never ending, believe they will get better. You have to fight through some bad days to earn the best days of your life. And in contrast, when things are good know that this too is temporary. That is why being present and in the the moment is so important and being grateful for what it is now because tomorrow it may not be.
Change is the one constant in the universe.
2 Corinthians 4: 17-18 “For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever. So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.”
This too, shall pass. When things are bad, remember : it won't always be this way. Take one day at a time. When things are good, remember: it won't always be this way. Enjoy every great moment.
I wrote this because I had to personally remind myself. I was having a hard day and emotions were flooding through me, waves of pain and sadness. The first thing that came to mind was to go to the gym, but you see that is a distraction to bury what was coming up for me. So I sat through it, I cried, then I began to write. For me pain brings on inspiration, like all great love songs come from heartbreak. Another thing to remember is that we all are going though something, remember you are not alone. We are all in this together. Look back at all that you've gone through, you made it pass what you thought was the end of the world and you will make it this time too.
